Upma is a snack which is served during breakfast or tea time. It is most common in southern India and one can make it using lots of options like wheat rawa, semolina, cereals, oats and the list is endless. I tried my hands using bread as it is readily available and can be cooked in few minutes. One can use the vegetables of his/her choice and add to the variations as per the taste. Ingredients mentioned below makes serving for 2 people and it takes 10 minutes to cook.

Lets look at the ingredients used:-
Bread Upma

  1. Bread Slices 6
  2. Oil 2tsp
  3. Onion 1
  4. Tomato 1
  5. Curry leafs 7-8
  6. Peas 1/2 bowl
  7. Carrot 1
  8. Lemon 1
  9. Peanuts 1/4 bowl
  10. Small mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
  11. Salt to taste
  12. Turmeric powder  1/2 tsp

Looking at the step by step procedure:-
First of all take bread slices, crumble them and keep aside.

Then in a pan add oil, when it is hot fry the peanuts and keep it aside to be added at the later stage.

After that put small mustard seeds, curry leafs and chopped onion. Saute the onion till golden brown.

Then add the finely chopped carrot and saute it. One must note that; more finely the carrot is chopped the lesser time it takes to get tender.

Also add peas and saute them along with other vegetables. Add salt at this stage as it will help in making the vegetables cook faster.

Tomatoes are deseeded and added. They will leave water and also help in cooking the other vegetables.

After this turmeric powder is added and crumbled bread slices are mixed in properly along with the cooked vegetables.

Lastly add the fried peanuts and squeeze the lemon juice over it. Garnish it with raisins and cashew or one can use fresh coriander leaf. It tastes best with a glass of juice or a cup of tea.
